Hi Andres. I am deeply resonating with this post, as I also moved to Sweden 2 years ago, and it was one of the best decisions I could have made, both personally and professionally. If you ever swing by Göteborg, we could grab a coffee. Sheers, and keep up the excellent work.
Super interesting journey Andres! The move from California to Europe isn’t super common so your thought process of making such a big decision was really useful! Maybe I’m interpreting it wrong, but it sounded like the job
search process internationally (or at least in Sweden) isn’t very different from the US, is that right?
It's so great to hear a first-hand experience from data professionals like you! Honestly, I have a special love for the northern countries—Copenhagen is my absolute favorite! I'm actually in the process of moving to the Netherlands for a change of scenery.
Thanks for being so open and sharing your journey with us, Andres! Hope I can do the same in the coming years!! ✨
I am surprised you found Stockholm low-cost, I have only visited but have a friend who lived locally. I found Stockholm to be quite an expensive place compared to much of Europe. I live in London for reference.
It's definitely not cheap, but its relative. I think for someone with a tech salary is quite reasonable. And I'm also taking into account how much you save with employee benefits (compared to US).
The problem is that inflation is making everything more expensive everywhere.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Andres! The Pros / Cons list was really helpful, especially since I had been considering visiting to check out the tech scene there.
Working in tech puts us in a quite privilege position, salary wise, and even though taxes are quite high (35+% for mid-senior level Data Scientist/ML Engineer), after factoring living expenses, you should have around 25% of your net income left for other expenses (more if you share the cost with a partner)

Hey Alberto! I'm happy you enjoyed the article.
And whenever I stop by Göteborg I'll definite send you a message :)

Happy to hear Josep. You know, I still haven’t been to Denmark. Hopefully, one of these days I will take the train down south and visit Copenhagen.
That’s awesome, I’d love to hear more once you move.

Thank you for reading Jack :)
Ah okay, the US must be even more high cost of living than London then, I shall avoid aha
Yeah it's really hard to find somewhere with a reasonable cost of living now
Thanks for sharing

If you are ever around let me know. Stockholm is a nice city and even though the tech scene is quite small, there are lots of great talent.
Thank you for reading Rohan!
I will do, for sure! 🙌
Thanks Andres. This is very valuable personally for me. Do you know how salaries compare in sweden compared to cost of living ?
Happy to hear this breakdown was useful.

At least, that has been my experience so far.
