If you are just entering the job market, the best piece of advice I can give you is that taking any data job available is a poor career move. This doesn’t mean you should limit yourself to only accepting a 'Data Scientist' title straight out of university (or BootCamp) though.
Thankyou for posting this! It is hard to get a data scientist job at an entry level , requires 2/3 years of experience even for an entry role, needed this!
You are very welcome. This has a lot to do with the current state of the market, hopefully it will stabilise in the coming year but it’s important you move strategically.
It may not be true, but I'd imagine people getting into data science via the alternative path would be generally more motivated compared to the direct path people, because they had to really fight for finally becoming a data scientist. 🙂
Also, if someone didn't study data science at a university, the alternative path is most probably their only option to get into the field.
Thanks for sharing this, I'm just a few months away from finishing my undergrad degree in Comp sci, it's been difficult finding a data science role. I will start looking into data analyst and the likes 👍. Do you have any advice for a newb ?
After my diverse professional journey from translator/interpreter to technical writer to agile couch/scrum master to product owner/product manager, I was always interested in data science.
Do you have any advice for people who do not have a computer science degree, e.g. language specialists?
My substack focusses on bringing language specialists into the software industry. As data scientist or analyst is a very attractive job in that field, I'd love go scetch out possible paths for non computer-scientists.

Really liked the list about the job titles too! 👏
At the end of the day, it’s truly about the journey to getting there, it certainly was for me.
Thank you for offering your reflection Tamás, happy you enjoyed the article.
